Writing Assessment Services can help private schools and study centers by developing curriculum plans, designing customized courses, offering evaluation of student work, and training teachers.
We begin with a complimentary exchange of email to discuss your needs. Sometimes my best counsel is to refer you to another program or curriculum. But if I can serve you best myself, from this point we will develop a plan of more extensive consultation or curriculum development. Fees begin at $60 for a simple consultation.
A curriculum plan may be as simple as customizing my Great Books Writing Workshop to fit your history cycle, or it may encompass a long-term plan for the whole school, using my resources and others to build an effective program of classical writing instruction. As a founding board member of Augustine School in Jackson, Tennessee, I worked with others to develop the school's entire short-term and long-term curriculum plan.
Blackburn Study Center in the Pittsburgh area used a customized syllabus and my Progymnasmatamaterials to guide a local teacher in a course for 2005-06. I met with the teacher and several BSC officers for a half day of teacher training in the philosophy and methodology of the course.
I enjoy the challenge of designing a customized course based on a school's needs, or to use a particular resource. The downloads page offers some complimentary instructional plans based on excellent resources, and my current course offerings may be modified for your school. New in 2010, you may enroll in a "Resource Membership" with my courses to provide on-the-spot teacher training and interaction for assignments in the Great Books, Progymnasmata, or Apprenticeship Writing Workshop.
Often schools desire more extensive evaluations of student work than the local teachers can provide, and in hybrid courses I complete some or all of the evaluations. This arrangement may be made through my existing or customized courses or your own.
In 2007-08 Grace Baptist Christian Academy in Attleboro, Massachusetts, had a local teacher meet with students twice weekly to present course materials I developed for two classes serving 6th-12th grades, concentrating on the Progymnasmata. The teacher submitted student work to me for evaluation throughout the year, and together we consulted on student progress and determined final grades.
Teacher Training can be accomplished through small local meetings, such as I offered to Augustine School in 2003, or in conference settings, such as those I have participated in since 2000, detailed in my Credentials . On-the-spot teacher training is also available through a "Resource Membership" in one of my courses or with teacher review of evaluated student assignments in my courses.
In Summer 2007 I participated in an online conference, a Classical Christian Homeschooling "Webinar" sponsored by Fritz Hinrichs of Escondido Tutorial Service , offering interactive Power Point talks "Writing About the Great Books" and "Evaluating Student Writing."
